Sound Check: Thetha FM

Hello there!

Ready to explore the power of community radio in South Africa? This edition takes you straight to the heart of Thetha FM.  We’ll explore this unique station in Gauteng and the impact they’re having on their listeners and the advertising landscape.

#1. FREQUENCY FACTS: DID YOU KNOW?

Location! Location! Location!

Remember that golden rule of real estate? It applies to community radio too!

These stations are deeply rooted in their communities. They speak the local language, understand local interests, and reach the people who live, work, and shop right around your business. It’s like having a laser focus on your most relevant audience.

Think of it like this: advertising on a local station is like having a conversation with your neighbours at the community fair. It’s a friendly, targeted way to connect with potential customers who are already interested in what your local business has to offer. Community radio – it’s about maximizing your message’s impact on the people who matter most!

That’s the beauty of community radio – it’s all about relevance!

#2. Sandra's STATION SPOTLIGHT

THE STATION WITH A BIG HEART!

Thetha FM isn’t your average radio station. Back in 1997, a crew of passionate young people decided to use radio to empower their community. They saw it as a way to spread knowledge, motivate change, and boost local businesses. After years of hard work, Thetha FM hit the airwaves in 2005, broadcasting on 100.6 MHz from Isikhumbuzo Secondary School in Orange Farm. Today, Thetha FM is the 2nd largest community radio station in Gauteng and covers the greater southern region.

Thetha FM speaks the languages of their community, with isiZulu, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana, and English all on the dial. Their shows (mostly talk shows) cover everything from health and business to current affairs and religion – basically, anything that matters to their listeners.

#3. BEST PRACTICE: YOUR HOW TO GUIDE

Hyper-Local Marketing

Did You Know?  South Africa has over 120 licensed community radio stations, each catering to a specific geographic area and cultural identity. This allows for highly targeted advertising campaigns that resonate with the unique needs and interests of each local audience.

#4. SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS: HOW LOCAL ADS MADE A BIG IMPACT

Theta FM - Woolworths Connects with Evaton Mall Community

Looking to connect with the community around their new store at Evaton Mall, retail giant Woolworths partnered with Thetha FM, a community radio station serving the greater Johannesburg area.

Thetha FM’s deep understanding of the local audience made them the perfect partner.  Through a combination of promotional live reads on-air, an outside broadcast directly from the mall on opening day (pictured), and a Facebook post promoting the event, Thetha FM helped Woolworths generate excitement and reach the residents most likely to visit their new store.
